Cultural Capsule volunteer drive (Service)
Garba is a traditional folk dance of Gujarat that is performed during the festival of Navratri. It is a vibrant and energetic dance that celebrates the triumph of good over evil. In this blog post, I will share my experience of teaching Garba to a government school and how it helped me to develop as a person while making a positive impact on the community.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop area for growth
Teaching Garba to a government school was a rewarding experience that helped me to develop personally and socially. By working with the students, I was able to improve my communication and interpersonal skills. I also gained a better understanding of the challenges faced by the students and the community they come from. This experience helped me to become more empathetic and compassionate towards others. Garba is a fast-paced dance that requires a lot of movement and energy. By teaching the dance, I was able to promote physical activity among the students and encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle. In addition, I was also able to improve my own physical fitness by practicing and performing the dance with the students.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Teaching Garba to a government school involved a lot of collaboration. I worked closely with the ngo leaders and the volunteers, to plan and execute the dance session. I also collaborated with the students, encouraging them to work together and support each other in their dance practice. Through this collaboration, we were able to create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encouraged teamwork and mutual respect.
Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Garba is a traditional folk dance of Gujarat that has gained popularity all over the world. By teaching Garba to a government school, I was able to introduce the students to a global culture and engage them in a new and exciting experience. Not only did we just teach, but we also learnt a lot from them. They told us about how they celebrate navratri, the dance steps they follow and their beliefs. Through this global engagement, we were able to break down cultural barriers and promote cross-cultural understanding.Â
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Teaching Garba to a government school required me to consider ethical issues such as cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. I made sure to teach the dance in a way that was respectful of the culture and traditions of Gujarat. I also ensured that the dance session was inclusive and open to all students, regardless of their background or ability.
In conclusion, teaching Garba to a government school was a journey of personal growth and community development. Through this experience, I was able to promote physical activity, develop my personal and social skills, collaborate with others, engage with a global culture, and consider ethical issues. I hope that this experience has inspired the students to embrace their cultural heritage and pursue their passions with enthusiasm and dedication.
