Beach cleaning

World Coastal Cleanup Day took place on 17 September with the aim of inspiring individuals to clean beaches and raise awareness about safeguarding and conserving waterways and oceans. On this day, schools created an opportunity for students to participate in the activity, which led to the writer and their friends going to Dumas Beach in Surat to collect litter that had been carelessly left behind by visitors in various locations.

LO4 –Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences:

I demonstrated determination and dedication by focusing on one section of the beach and spending two hours cleaning it. This illustrates my strong commitment to maintaining the beach’s beauty and ecological integrity.

LO5 –Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
We realized that it wasn’t possible for one person to clean the beach alone, so we decided to create a group. This would enable us to gather more litter and work more efficiently, which was our ultimate goal of cleaning the beach. Working as a group required us to collaborate and use our skills effectively, and it resulted in us being able to clean the area thoroughly.

LO6-Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:

Our community and environmental sustainability are often ignored. Despite relying on nature for our survival, we fail to properly take care of it, recklessly littering and causing damage to both the environment and its beauty. Moreover, we neglect cleanliness and sanitation, ignoring the harmful effects of plastic on both land and water ecosystems.

LO7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
I took part in a cleanup effort and joined a social cause by cleaning the seashore to preserve the ocean and marine creatures. By doing so, I helped the community and marine life, which was an ethical decision as it ensured the beach area was kept clean.

In summary, taking part in the beach cleaning activity allowed me to fulfill my responsibility as a member of the community and taught me about the importance of cleanliness in our surroundings. Through my participation, I demonstrated the learner profile attributes of being caring and knowledgeable. I showed care for the environment by cleaning the beach and raising awareness about the issue, while also exhibiting knowledge and efficiency in my work. Additionally, our group’s efforts improved the appearance of the beach and created a safer environment for marine life, benefiting both myself and the natural surroundings.
