I dedicated three weekends in August to participate in a community service program organized by our school. During these sessions, underprivileged children from government schools visited our campus, and we engaged them in various enjoyable activities aimed at teaching them new skills. Specifically, I volunteered to lead sessions on stone painting and leaf art, providing hands-on guidance and fostering creativity among the children.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth Screen reader support enabled.
Throughout three consecutive weekends, my engagement in CAS provided daily opportunities for self-reflection and personal growth. This active involvement underscored the significance of teaching others as a means of enhancing my own skills while facilitating their development. The experience illuminated how guiding others through the knowledge acquired during my CAS journey not only helped me improve personally but also demonstrated the distinction between proficiency and effective teaching. Moreover, this engagement notably enhanced my proficiency in painting, arts, and crafts, while teaching the children bolstered my confidence.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Interacting with children from a Gujarati-medium school posed a communication challenge, particularly when explaining football terminology in simple terms due to my limited proficiency in Gujarati. However, navigating this obstacle presented an opportunity for personal growth. Throughout this experience, I demonstrated my willingness to tackle challenges and adapt by acquiring new communication skills. As a result, I’ve not only improved my ability to effectively communicate but also showcased my capacity to overcome barriers and acquire new competencies.
LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Given the many opportunities I’ve been fortunate to receive, I find this kind of service incredibly valuable because it reflects the principles my parents taught me: always lend a helping hand to those in need, and you’ll be rewarded twofold. This idea holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me of the countless people who lack the opportunities we often take for granted. I wanted to share the knowledge and experiences I’ve gained with others who may not have had the same chances. In my own small way, I aim to spread the joy of art and craft and contribute positively to those around me.
