Monsoon Musings (Event Coordinator)

I love reading and writing original pieces, especially poetry, which is why when this opportunity presented itself I knew I had to grab it. Organizing this event meant being able to articulate my love for literature and share it with people who also hold the same fondness for words. It was also challenging since I am not the best at communication and group tasks which is why this event was the perfect chance for me to get out of my comfort zone. I collaborated with three other students in order to organize this event which helped in giving students/teachers/parents a platform to come and read their pieces, may it be in the form of poetry or any other form.

LO1 (Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth)-

This experience helped me shed some light on my own strengths and weaknesses. I understood that I am good at generating new, innovative and creative ideas. I am also good at time management and getting all the work done, while balancing academics and school. Something that I could improve on is my leadership skills and my communication skills. I was able to comprehend the importance of knowing my abilities and how to enhance and work on your limitations through this experience.

LO2 (Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills)-

Given the amount of work we had to do in the short period of time, planning and organizing such an event was something I had never done before. It seemed really challenging and required different skill sets. As mentioned earlier, I have always loved writing poems but I had never edited any before. During this event, I had to edit several poems and other pieces written by students, parents and teachers. This was really tricky for me but I managed to do it well. I also had to help with decoration and art which is not my strongest suit but I ultimately took up the challenge and did it.

LO3 (Initiate and plan a CAS experience)-

The event took extensive planning on my part in order for me to make it a successful one. Because I had never planned anything before, it was a little more difficult for me. I also needed to schedule my time for studying and planning the event, which I was able to do because the term had just begun. I would need to better manage my time if I ever did an event like this again in between the term or at the end of the term due to the increased number of assignments at that time.

LO4 (Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience)-

Since this was the first time I was the event coordinator for an event, I was pumped and excited to make this season the best one for Monsoon Musings. The teachers, all the coordinators, volunteers and me volunteered for early-ins where we worked hard to make the event a success. We also made sure that everything was perfect and nothing was left to compromise. We worked during our breaks and had regular meetings for follow-ups.

LO5 (Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively)-

All the 4 coordinators (including me), worked collaboratively with each other. We assigned roles and assignments to each other based on our respective skills and weaknesses, and we all cooperated. Although there were times when our teamwork was a little rocky and we missed a few deadlines, we all recovered, revised our plans, and finished our tasks fast, making the event a success at last.

The event was a great success. Everyone enjoyed it a lot, while pouring their hearts out through their words. I was able to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses through this wonderful experience that I will never forget, while I also learnt how to work on my limitations. I developed leadership skills and learnt how to collaboratively work with others in order to achieve success. All in all, planning and coordinating this event was a huge learning experience for me.
