Designing a dress

I’ve always had a passion for design, whether it’s for a product, a piece of clothing, or even an entire house. My interests have always been most piqued by making and producing things

LO 1: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I was always interested in designing and wanted to try something new except for drawing ideas on paper. This is why I chose to take this project in hand so that I could try something new and learn a new skill. As soon as I started designing variations for the dresses I understood how I knew almost every aspect of the product she needed, and worked upon things that I was weak at.

LO3 : Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I had planned this task for 4  days. On the first day, I had a google meeting with my friend who needed the dress for her farewell, in this case, she was my client and we discussed how to go about the design. On the second day, I started to design a total of 3 designs of the dress. On the third day, I again conducted a meeting with my friend and showed her all the designs. Then we selected a design and made the last few changes as we incorporated other ideas from different designs. This was the first time that I had organized a project this way in order to make the flow of my work more productive and less confusing. Also, the way I could understand the task that I have to complete in a span of time.

LO5 : Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

I had taken up this project all by myself so, I did not have a lot of communication with a team. I am not the best at communicating but because this project had to consider the client’s choice as well; I had to go with what the client chose and not what I liked. Because of my poor communication skill, I had to do a few things that I did not wish to do at all just because I couldn’t convince the client that their choice isn’t the best here thus I worked collaborated, and developed the IB learner profile communication alongside bettering my verbal communication skills.

LO 7 : Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

In my journey of designing dresses for my friend’s farewell, I embraced sustainability and the principles of slow fashion. Mindful of ethical choices, I prioritized eco-friendly materials and timeless designs, aiming to minimize environmental impact and promote conscious consumption. Collaborating closely with my friend, I integrated sustainable practices into every stage of the design process, fostering awareness of the importance of ethical fashion. Through thoughtful consideration and reflection, I navigated the intersection of creativity and sustainability, embodying the principles of responsible design and contributing to a more sustainable future in the realm of fashion.

The learner profiles that I have focused on through this experience are thinker, reflective and communicator. Designing requires a lot of thought process, from what materials to use to how to make sure the illustrations and the final product match as much as possible, one has to reflect on elements of a design that are not working and alter it and communicate with the client about their opinions and thoughts and consider changes until everyone is satisfied.
