I participated in the Global Odyssey event that the BM & Eco students and teachers arranged. We students were given the opportunity to organize this event in order to experience how a business operates in the real world. I was in the accounts team whose purpose was to help the other teams on the event day as their cashier and calculate their revenue, profit/loss, and take out a specific percentage to donate.
LO1:Â Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
As I was good and confident in my basic math skills I chose to be in the Accounts team. On the event day, a lot of people would come to the stalls to buy the goods sold by the respective people, and we would have to quickly give exchange in order to lessen the crowd, and that meant calculating fast.
LO2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the challenges that we faced was that initially the accounts team had to create a coupon system so that no money is stolen from anyone. The only thing left was the final stage of the coupon system but it was cancelled and we had to improvise and it worked out well in the end.
LO5 : Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Due to the fact that this was a student-led event, the whole planning process—from setup to stall management to event execution—required teamwork. I was able to better collaborate with my team members as a result of this event, and we also dispersed and balanced our work while having a lot of fun. The success of this event was ultimately attributed to the contributions of all the students.
LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics and choices of actions.
Ethics is an important aspect in business as not following ones ethics can lead to disaster. During the event, we were given clear instructions of not stealing money from other teams as the money was earned from their effort and it would not be right to take someone else’s money. Some amount of the revenue generated from the event was also donated to the charity to help the people in need.
