Creative Mela is an event organized by students for different grades of students. I was one of the organizers for this year;s creative mela which we organized for the students of grade 7 to grade 10. This event consists of 20 different workshops that kids can attend at least any two at them in which they are interested. My job was to plan the decor, workshops and collection of volunteers for each workshop and resources for this event.
LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I have always enjoyed different forms of arts and crafts growing as a child. I have always chosen to study visual arts whenever we had the opportunity. Being in visual arts for several years, I had the knowledge of different forms of arts or different forms of artistic activities that exist and can be conducted to indulge children into their liked workshops. Using this knowledge, I created a list of 25 workshops that can be conducted for the MYP kids and through this I was able to identify my strengths in knowing different forms of craftsmanship and arts.
LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the challenges we faced was communication. Due to lack of communication between the organizers and the workshop conductors, there was a lot of miscommunication regarding the number of students to take in for a particular workshop, regarding the resources required by several students to conduct the workshop. We faced a lot of issues because it was difficult to find volunteers to conduct a few of the workshops due to absenteeism. As an organizer, my job was not to conduct a workshop but because on the event day due to lack of communication and absenteeism, I had filled in the role of conducting a workshop for the first few hours of the event. It was difficult at first but the event taught me how to overcome certain challenges and how to manage on the spot issues with limited time in hand and with so much patience.
LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
It was a tedious task to manage this large number of students from 4 grades who were visiting our planned workshops. We had to make sure that we are not exceeding our limit of 20 people in one particular workshop because of limited resources and limited amount of time. I had to prepare a list of names beforehand to make sure that the right people were going in for their chosen workshop. We had to calculate the budget and number of resources required at each art workstation to avoid lack of resources during the workshop. It was important that we stayed in the budget provided by our school while collecting resources for each of the workshops keeping in mind the number of students that are going to be attending the creative mela.
