World Literacy Day | Service

Everyone at our school was affected by a special event that was held to commemorate Literacy Day. Instead of focusing on reading and writing skills, the event’s major objective was to familiarise guests with the struggles and life stories of our school’s support staff. It was an eye-opening event for all of us. The event was organised by students, and we made a lot of effort to maintain class decorum and organise every element of it. We learned about their struggles and setbacks in life as well as how tenaciously they overcame them. It was a good opportunity to remember that literacy is more than simply reading and writing. It’s crucial to comprehend our environment and the people that make our lives easier.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
Here, the issue was a lack of education. Being literate allows one to expand their knowledge and find a rewarding career, which benefits the entire country. Many people on this planet do not have proper access to education because of financial limitations or other considerations. This problem could be the result of a lack of education. Education of the youth is essential to reducing the issue. During this occasion, Didis talked about the importance of education. Again, the learner profile over here was a communicator since Didi and the students were both questioning and we talked a lot. We must respect everyone’s point of view and provide the other learner profile the chance to be an open-minded person.

LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
It was a very important task to plan this event and spread the message about the value of education from the perspective of the support staff, who we don’t typically associate with literacy. It made us realise how much we take literacy for granted and that it encompasses much more than what is written in textbooks. Students were greatly impacted by this event because they heard the Didis’ personal experiences on the value of literacy.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

I took part in this event a few days before the actual event and had the least amount of preparation for the event, however, this event helped me become more spontaneous and always on the toes since I am a very ‘organising everything previously’ kind of person.

LEARNER PROFILE ATRIBUTES: It encouraged me to think more deeply about the possibilities I receive, the degree to which I am privileged, and the importance of gratitude. I became more understanding of others who have less privilege and how they continue to educate their children in spite of everything.
