Bal Mela is the biggest event of the year at school where underprivileged children from various schools which are operated by the SMC (Surat Municipal Corporation) are invited to enjoy different activities under sports, arts, music & dance.
LO1:
As a part of the arts group at Bal Mela, I had the opportunity to channel my creativity and help the kids make string art. I came up with different designs to create string art which was unique to each kid. I also encouraged the kids to experiment with different colors and patterns to create something that they can keep with them for a long time.
LO2:
One of the biggest challenges I faced at Bal Mela was the language barrier and dividing my attention amongest so many kids at once. Even though I speak their tongue, I tried to use a mix of gestures, expressions, and basic words to convey instructions and understand what they were trying to communicate. This helped me develop my communication skills and taught me the importance of being patient and understanding when working with people from different backgrounds and culutures. The large group of students made it harder to help every student with their art however with the help of my fellow team members and practicing patience helped me deliver my skills in a much more effective manner.
LO7:
Working with underprivileged kids from government schools helped me develop a greater sense of empathy and understanding for people who did not have as much financial advantage as I did. Despite the crowd and the differences in our backgrounds, I was able to connect with the kids and help them enjoy the event. This experience taught me the importance of putting myself in other people’s shoes and taking the time to understand their perspective and their experiences.
