Participating in world coastal clean-up day

As one of my CAS experiences, I participated in a beach clean up event which was organized my SMC . Our task was to collect and dispose the non-biodegradable waste. After this experience, I understood the significance of disposal of waste materials. At beaches often the government help can’t reach which pollutes the sand and sea making it an inhospitable environment for any living organisms. Through the efforts of us volunteers we were successfully able to eradicate the waste from the beach . This helped me cater to the SDG’s 13 – climate action and 14 – life below water as this experience contributed to sustaining our environment and underwater life .

This experience catered to the service aspect of my CAS as -  My friends and I were able to collect a variety of trash, including polythene bags, bottle caps, glass bottles, and packets,  tin cans, ropes and etc among other items that would have deteriorated over hundreds of years, and only into smaller, more dangerous particles at that. The combined efforts of hundreds of people left the beach practically neat , despite the fact that my friends only managed to fill few bags of trash . This undoubtedly enabled the beach to thrive both now and in the future because the plastics that otherwise may have killed wildlife.

I catered to different number of learning outcomes in this experience . To begin with

LO2 – demonstrate the challenges that have been undertaken , developing new skills – as was totally a new experience for me where I had no expertise in despite that I took up this challenge and helped bring a change in our environment.

LO 5 – demonstrating skills and benefits of working collaboratively which focuses on how we work with others, was something I displayed through collaborating with a variety of people, including members of my friends, other students, and even volunteers out of the school.  Also,

LO 6- engagement with issues of global significance addresses our involvement with global issues, which I was able to do through my participation to the fight against environmental pollution . Finally,

LO 7 – recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions , encourages us to think on the ethical component of our behaviour. I made choice to be a part of this experience though individually my effort wouldn’t make much of a difference but I was a part something which requires immediate attention by everyone.

To sum up, this was a truly eye-opening event for me since I got to personally witness the tremendous energy and impact that a big group of people can have when they put their minds to something. From this CAS experience, I learned how we can work together towards a shared objective to become more effective than any of us could be alone, and I also learned about the good feelings that come with protecting our home for the benefit of future generations.
