Literacy Day

International Literacy Day is an annual event observed on September 8th, aiming to raise awareness about the significance of literacy and promote global literacy efforts. This year’s theme, “Transforming Literacy Learning Space,” provided us with an opportunity to reconsider the critical importance of literacy learning spaces in building resilience and ensuring equality and inclusive education for all. We utilized the occasion to reflect on the role of Support Staff as educators during our early schooling years and their impact on us. This served as a medium to highlight that every person, irrespective of their societal position, has the capacity to teach and make a meaningful impact on our lives. We facilitated the staff to share their perceptions of education and tell their stories through their time with the school.

LO-1: Identifying own strengths and developing areas for growth One of my notable strengths was effective communication with the support staff. The didis and bhaiyas initially seemed hesitant to be on stage and share their stories and experiences. They appeared shy and concerned about presenting themselves in front of a large audience. However, I was able to persuade them by encouraging the use of the language they were most comfortable with and ensured the audience’s awareness to respect and appreciate their efforts. While I had initial concerns about the audience, they turned out to be very welcoming and warm towards them.

LO-2: Demonstrating the challenges faced and developing new skills One of the significant challenges I encountered was maintaining an organized planning system. Throughout the process, keeping track of volunteers and team members regarding the seating schedule, presentation, invitation, and more was challenging. There were days when I even forgot scheduled meetings with coordinators. However, over time, I gradually improved my planning skills and learned techniques from fellow members to avoid a messy plan. Eventually, I successfully managed the entire event smoothly.

LO-4: Showing perseverance and commitment in the CAS Experience The primary objective to make this event successful was a commitment to the entire program. Falling behind on any given task and postponing it made the planning increasingly difficult. Numerous tasks and people at different levels needed attention, whether it was inviting teachers, explaining the entire concept, or instructing volunteers on every task within the given time period. The consistent perseverance of me and my fellow members played a pivotal role in the event’s success.

LO-5: Demonstrating skills and recognizing the benefits of collaborative work I can confidently say that none of the accomplishments mentioned above would have been possible without a good and cooperative team. I had two fellow teammates as coordinators with me, and we ensured that we divided the work according to our strengths, providing assistance when needed. The volunteers were also instrumental in maintaining decorum and preventing chaos. Our grade mentors were a great support in helping us execute the idea.

LO-6: Demonstrating engagement with issues of global significance Focusing on quality education and equality, regardless of societal position, was crucial. The main aim was to convey to students that education is not confined to classrooms, books, and teachers; it is accessible everywhere. The supporting staff not only contributes to maintaining a positive school environment but also influences us positively, whether in good behavior or treating people right around them.

LO-7: Recognizing and considering the ethics of choices and actions Respect, kindness, and valuing everyone with equality were core values taken into account in this situation. It was reflected in how we communicated with the staff and ensured this experience was special for them. They may be a little shy presenting themselves in front of a huge audience, so we had to be a little more cautious and make them comfortable. Additionally, we aimed to make them feel respected and wanted, letting them know that their efforts were not going unnoticed.
