Teaching Frisbee to underprivileged children (Service)

I chose this experience since frisbee has been an interest of mine since a very long time. I have also been competing in the sport since many years. So, when my school presented the opportunity to enabled underprivileged kids to get a chance to discover the sport that is positively affected me in many ways, I volunteered without hesitation. Children from the local village schools had come to play and learn frisbee and I was the one of the few volunteers responsible for teaching them the sport.

Learning Objective 1

Through the experience of teaching the children multiple times, I realized that although I have more than adequate skills in the sport of frisbee it does not mean that my skill will translate into teaching the sport. The experience showed me that I need to learn how to efficiently communicate my skills to the children. Playing well is one skill however teaching well is a completely separate skill which I developed thanks to this CAS experience.

Learning Objective 3 & 5

Being one of the few experienced players, I was also responsible for planning the drills and lesson plan for every session based on my previous experience in the sport, I had to decide which drill will be most effective for the skill range of the children. I also had to communicate the same to the other volunteers as well as collaborate with them to manage all the children we had to teach. Such smooth collaboration really helped us make proper use of our time.

Learning Objective 6

Quality of education is right for everyone. Frisbee will help them to expand their mindset in terms of critically thinking in stressful situations. Frisbee will also help them maintain their health and expose them to new opportunities in terms of physical and mental education.
