My first MUN conference turned out to be a blessing in disguise! I filled the form because I got too excited after listening the word RESEARCH about nations and specific agendas. I really liked this kind of stuff and this MUN thing seemed to be really fun.But soon the unawareness and under-preparation burst my bubble of excitement. I did what my teachers and mentors told me. Although didn’t find much material online and prepared as well as I was able to. Had a lot of self doubt on my research too.
LO2:Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
The opening speech gives the audience the first impression of who you will be throughout the two-day conference. However, this is much more significant and intimidating than attire. You have one and a half minutes, – approximately 100 words, to transform the 200 pages of your research into an impressive, well-organized speech for the committee.I was bit nervous as this was my first MUN experience and I was still figuring out what was going on but the co-chair of the committee encouraged everyone to speak out confident and putting the research efforts altogether,I gave my speech and participated in the caucuses as well. It helped me develop my leadership skills, research, writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills.
LO5:Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
MUN involves meeting new people, interacting with unfamiliar faces, working in teams to develop resolutions to assigned tasks and to express views in a self-assured manner. From preparing for the MUNs to the discussions, debates, and resolutions made during the MUN, the entire experience served to boost my confidence. We as UNHRC TEAM focused on our agenda which was Combating intolerance and discrimination against people based on Identity. After participating in MUN, I felt much more comfortable working with new people and expressing myself easily. The confidence I gained will definitely help me in future interactions.
