Volunteering at Manav Sadhna in Ahmedabad

I feel privileged enough to study in an IB school when I look at poor students outside staring at my bus. I always wanted to help these children and understand their life. During one of the sessions in Race To Embrace Club, I met Nimo, Nimesh Patel. He has been working with Manav Sadhna since 12 years and hearing his experience, inspired me to witness that in real life. Manav Sadhna is a nonprofit organisation in Gandhi Ashram at Ahmedabad. This organisation includes children from poor family and untouchable communities. I went to volunteer in this organisation where I would spend time with these kids helping them make products that earns them, playing activities with them so that they get a change in their regular lifestyle and served them food. Also in the early morning we went to rag-picking with the ragpicker didis and helped them pick up trash which earns them more money. Along with me, 7 other girls were interested for same. Thus, I took the leadership and arranged the complete plan from 2 days along with logistics. This experience helped me develop as a person and helped me find my true self.

LO 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
For accomplishing this experience, it required a lot of pre-planning. The planning included transportation, stay and food for all 8 of us in another city. We also had to completely plan the two days about how will we use the time effectively and efficiently. Various roles and responsibilities were to be met in-order to successfully carry out the experience.

LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
This experience was done with 7 other individuals with me. There were different roles distributed within the team. While deciding the agenda and plan for the two days, I needed to be open-minded and respect everyone’s opinions. During the two days, we shared a lot of knowledge we had with each other and also with the students whom we taught things. We learnt more than we taught everyone.

LO 6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Due to poverty worldwide many young children are not able to study. Manav Sadhna is one of the organization helping such children teach and pull them out of the vicious circle of poverty. While engaging with these children and helping them learn new things, we tried to pass our knowledge them and help them develop their skills. We also developed awareness and responsibility towards a shared humanity. This CAS experience addressed global issues in a local and national context.

Volunteering at a completely unknown place was a different experience and made me develop two major attributes of caring and reflective. While interacting with these kids I needed to be empathetic and respectful towards them. With this experience I aimed to bring a positive change in the society and the lives of this children using my compassionate commitment to service. Moreover I developed my reflective skills because while I was working with those children, I realized that I am learning new skills from them rather than me teaching them. Even though they have quite less luxuries than me, they are much more happier in life. All these thoughts made me reflect back to my life and understand myself better.
