French Immersion

The French Immersion was to celebrate the French culture and to provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with a new language through an entertaining way. Many types of games were included where both teachers and students got a scope to engage with the French Culture.

Learning a new language is difficult but learning it through games and facts about the country is fun and easy as well as helps to remember better. With the help of French Immersion, I was able to revise what I have learnt so far in a fun way and help students and teachers to learn new words and phrases.

LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Getting the hang of a brand new language is challenging but getting the hang of conversing in that language is worse. When I found out that we were supposed to converse with students and teachers in French, I got nervous. Immediately, I rehearsed the basic sentences and introductory phrases one should be aware of and felt that I’d be good to go. When the time of the event arrived, and people started approaching I started to get ready with my role and introduce them to our booth. My group and I’s booth was matching the write word with the pictures provided. During the event, there were some images I wasn’t aware of but with the help of this idea I was able to learn quite a lot of new vocabulary along with teaching other students and teachers. Additionally, I realized it was a fun way to practice my French and improve my speaking.

LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

A few challenges that I faced were struggling to answer in fluent French. It was a bit nerve-racking to be on the spot and speak almost fluently in a whole different language. In order to overcome this, I set goals to practice basic sentences more often and converse with myself in order to get better at it. I believe that this event helped me to undertake new challenges and it was important for me to recognize my weaknesses so that I could work on them improve further.

LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

As this was my very first French event, I had known that preparation was the key and to keep myself on task throughout the process. Without focus and commitment it wouldn’t have worked out because practicing was the only way out. I would call myself someone who is easily distracted and to avoid that, I made sure to keep out of everything that would tempt me to procrastinate. Commitment and perseverance was necessary for this event due to the fact that it was a new language and getting the hang of it took me quite some time. Nevertheless, I believe that this event was a successful one as my teammates and I were able to fortunately entertain and help acquire new vocabulary in French.
