Cleaning Dumas Beach

One of the most popular destinations in Surat is the Dumas beach. Despite being a popular tourist destination, the shore is littered with trash. Both the marine life and the visitors are negatively impacted by this. To address this my buddies and I decided to clean the beaches by hand, We did the same under an initiative called “Thalassophiliccc”. We continued this initiative over a number of weekends. This also catered to the SDG clean water and sanitation.

Learning Outcome 4

I persevered and committed in numerous ways during this process. One of them involved getting up at 7 a.m. on the weekends to go clean the beach; this took a lot of work because the weekends are typically the only days of the week when I get enough sleep. Also, I had Frisbee practice throughout this period in prep for future tournaments, which required me to sometimes hastily switch locations and tasks in order to complete both cleaning and practice on the same day.

Learning Outcome 5

Working cooperatively helped us to collect more trash and also motivated us to collect more for the betterment of the environmental. Moreover, it led to us enjoying each other’s companies during the tedious process of beach cleaning. It gave us a sense of togetherness in solving the issue of littering.

Learning Outcome 6

Pollution degrades and destroys unique beach habitat needed by animals and plants. A polluted beach is a public health risk and can reduce the amount of tourism the beach can provide. Therefore, the issue we catered was one of great significance. Our initiative was also connected to the sustainable development goal of clean water and sanitation.

Learning Outcome 7

This experience taught me how to make ethical choices in many different ways, it showed me that making the ethical choice is not always easy but it’s the right thing to do, I saw this first hand when after our first session we had 7-8 trash bags full and we had to dispose them, the easier thing to do would be to leave them at the side and hope somebody for the municipal corporation takes them, However them risks the trash bags ripping and spreading trash again. therefore, we decided to do the ethical thing and carry the bags all the way to a dedicated dumpster. Even though it left a bad smell in my mother’s car we made the ethical choice.

To conclude, Beach cleaning was a great experience that I thoroughly enjoyed, sometimes about helping the environment always left me in a good state of mind, The experience also helped me build any new relationships and friendships during its tenure.
