FSMUN 9.0

Model United Nation is a popular event and looked forward to by everyone so when I got a chance to participate as a delegate I did not miss the golden opportunity. I was a delegate of Kenya in UNOOSA (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs), the agenda was “Use of space technology for international defense”. It was a 2 day conference held on 19th and 20th November.

LO’s I developed were:

LO 1: To prepare effectively, I had to identify what my strengths and weaknesses were. I knew that I had good research skills but communicating my ideas was something in which I struggled. Since this was my first time participating in a MUN I decided to deepen my knowledge about MUN by researching about MUNs’ and understanding the requirements and expectations from a delegate.

LO 2: Since communicating was something in which I lagged, I prepared my speech beforehand so that I would have time to prepare on my communication skills.

LO 5: It is often believed that MUNs don’t require group work, but lobbying is an important aspect in MUN. Lobbying is when delegates of a country discuss with other delegates about what their stand in the situation is and what are the solutions thought by other delegates about the problem/agenda. Since I was the delegate of Kenya it was necessary for me to ally with a strong country so that my country’s stand would be respected and taken in consideration.

LO 7: Everything said by a delegate speaking on behalf of a nation at the MUN is seen by the committee as an official declaration that will have an impact on the entire world. So, the ethics of decisions and actions would have to be taken into account, and the potential effects of the statement would have to be weighed, before making any statement, claim, or commitment to the world community.

This CAS experience helped me improve my research skills, collaborative skills, and the learner profile “Communication”
