Global Odyssey

Grade 11 BM and Economics students organized an event called “Global Odyssey”. This event was aimed to offer us a platform where we can implement our learning from Eco and BM and get exposure to how these concepts like marketing and pricing work in the practical world. The event was categorised into three: fun, food and fashion. Many teams, including the food, finance, entertainment, fashion, and decor team, worked together to make the event a success. I was in the photo booth department.

Learning outcome achieved during this experience :

LO 1 : Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I realized that my thinking skills are pretty great. I used this as my strength and gave many creative ideas for the photo booth which helped us as a team. Another advantage was that being a BM and Eco student I knew how to create product value and increase the demand for the product. Initially, we were not sure of how the customers going to react to our idea of the photo booth, so we kept the price at a decent amount. But as time went by, the demand for polaroid photos increased, and unfortunately, we didn’t have that much polaroid film, it was about to finish. Thus, we increased our price for polaroid photos so that we can have more profit. On the other hand, I wasn’t particularly great at art and crafts which was needed while decoring the photo booth, but I did watch a few online tutorial videos, which is how I overcome my weakness.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Through this event, I had the opportunity to learn new skills while developing other skills. The challenge that I faced was while decoring the frame for the photo booth but I enjoyed myself. we had few ideas but to due various reasons, we had to drop the idea and come up with new idea in limited time beng. Further, had to decorate the frame from scratch which include painting to make tassels, and flowers out of paper which was a time-consuming task. Further, every customer coming to our booth wanted to take a polaroid photo, and eventually, the films got finished due to the limited number of films we had. There was a point where we had to decline their request due to a lack of resources and we felt bad for not having enough resources.

LO 3 : Initiate and plan a CAS experience

As mentioned, we had to plan the entire set-up for the photo booth from scratch, which included what colour should the frame be, the material to be used, pricing for different photo types, and adhering to the theme of the event which was “boho”. To catch up with all this planning was a must. The event took place on 23rd February 2023 and we started our planning from 20th January 2023, so that we have enough time to prepare and don’t get burdened at the last moment. Also, we made a list of things we’ll need which was not possible with organising skills.

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

The photo booth is nothing without decor. And decor came with a lot of responsibility as we had to manage our time accordingly because we were only allowed to work during a specific slot. In addition, we had to spend some time outside of school hours to buy a few things for decoring the photo booth. All this wouldn’t be possible without perseverance and dedication towards the experience.

LO 5 : Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Without the students’ efforts, the event would not have been a success. Collaboration among children was essential to the event’s success. Personally, working collaboratively allowed us to complete the work quickly and efficiently, as we distributed the task among our group of people. Everyone would come up with creative ideas and opinions with helped us lead to improvement. We had to get teachers’ approval before doing anything, which required great communication skills, fortunately, we had a clear understanding and there was no lack of communication.

LO 7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Ethics plays the most crucial role in any business and it is one of the fundamental requirements. Similarly, we adhered to business ethics by treating each customer equally and charging them a fair and reasonable amount.

5 per cent of the money from our sales was collected by our school and donated to an NGO which engages with global significance since they promote a social cause and the funds raised will be distributed to people in need.
