I’ve had the opportunity to instruct young football players several times, and those experiences have helped me realise that having superior athletic ability does not guarantee success as a teacher. It soon became clear that I needed to learn how to effectively impart my knowledge to the kids. Playing well is one thing, but through this CAS experience, I learned how to teach successfully, which is a completely different ability.

As one of the few experienced players, I was also in charge of organising the drills and lesson plans for each session. Using my prior knowledge of the sport, I had to choose the drill that would be most useful for the children’s ability level. In order to manage all the kids we had to teach, I also had to share the same information with the other volunteers and work together with them. We were able to utilise our time much better thanks to such easy collaboration.

A universal opportunity to get a good education is provided through football. Playing this sport broadens one’s perspective, especially in terms of critical thinking under pressure. Football also helps people stay physically healthy and creates new chances for both physical and mental education.
