Me, along with a few others embarked on a beach cleanup project as part of our CAS initiative. We took the time to evaluate the beach’s condition and cleaned the most contaminated areas. Despite the heat, we dedicated several hours each day to ensure a thorough beach cleanup, doing our little in the hope to contribute to a larger effect. Our endeavor not only made a positive contribution to our community but also supported the cause of sustainable development. In the process, we aligned with Sustainable Development Goal Life on land and reflected on the SDG responsible consumption and production.
Learning Outcome 4 (LO4) – Demonstrating Commitment:
Our beach cleaning project was a clear display of our dedication and unwavering commitment. From the moment we decided to kick-start this initiative within our community to the long days spent cleaning the beach under the unforgiving sun, our commitment was evident. It wasn’t just about starting the project but about sticking with it throughout its duration. We learned that commitment means more than just beginning; it’s about persevering and genuinely impacting our local environment.
Learning Outcome 6 (LO6) – Addressing Global Concerns:
Our beach cleaning project extended beyond local boundaries; it addressed issues of global importance. By directly contributing to various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as making human settlements safer, practicing responsible consumption and production, tackling climate change, and safeguarding terrestrial ecosystems, we showed that we cared about global challenges. We weren’t simply cleaning the beach; we were actively engaged in addressing broader global issues.
earning Outcome 7 (LO7) – Making Ethical Choices:
Ethical considerations were at the heart of our beach cleaning efforts. We encouraged sustainable habits by reducing pollution and waste, acknowledging our ethical responsibility to preserve the environment. Our project also played a role in mitigating climate change, which is a pressing ethical concern. By working to restore the marine ecosystem’s health, we demonstrated our commitment to ethical and moral responsibilities towards society. In essence, our project was about more than just cleaning the beach; it was about making ethical choices and taking actions that reflected our values and principles, setting a positive example for responsible behavior.
Engaging in the beach cleaning project enabled me to embody the principles of the IB Learner Profile, becoming more principled by adhering to ethical responsibilities and caring by actively contributing to our community’s well-being and addressing global concerns like climate change and ecosystem health. This experience has nurtured a commitment to ethical decision-making and a genuine desire to make a positive impact, both locally and globally.
