Bal Mela Volunteering – Service

Education is not restricted to a classroom, it is the development of a child’s character and overall well-being where they are able to express themselves and embrace their strengths while working on weaknesses. Taking a holistic approach to education means focusing on all aspects of a child’s growth, not just their academic advancements. Most importantly, it’s about establishing the child’s overall wellbeing. Bal mela, which is organized by our school each year, is one such step which focuses on providing the underprivileged with opportunity. Bal mela is an event where hundreds of children from government schools across the city are invited and do activities which helps them get exposure to things they lack opportunity for like dance, art and craft, sports etc.

I volunteered for Bal Mela this year as had never participated in this wonderful and commendable initiative before. I was grateful to work with my own kindness and got nominated in the football department, hence, I got to teach underprivileged kids football. While doing so, I developed the following learning outcomes :-

LO 5 : I was communicator and open minded in working collaboratively in a group for the initiative that would bring joy to others. I demonstrated management and leadership qualities as I had to manage groups of children with the help of other students and organize a system where everyone gets a fair chance to play football. My team-members helped me with arranging queues and working in a group made the task easier and smoother.

LO 6 : I got the opportunity to contribute my part in bring joy to others for a moment it may be. I realized that working for the joy of others gives me more happiness than anything I do for self-interest. This small initiative made a big impact in the path of trying to eliminate poverty and providing quality education as children need holistic development to become well rounded physically and mentally.

LO 7 : I recognized that Bal Mela was a great step by the school as getting a fair and equal opportunity is the right of every child and experiences various forms of arts and sports enabled the underprivileged children to get that right. This further fosters the world to bring a change and how even a small action can lead to big achievements.
