I served as a volunteer at this year’s ISSO (International School Sports Organization) event hosted at our school. My primary responsibility involved guiding teams to their respective venues and offering support in event organization, ensuring everything proceeded according to plan and addressing any issues that arose. The event spanned five days and featured a variety of activities, including a social gathering, a school parade, the main matches, and an awards ceremony. This experience provided me with valuable insights into orchestrating a large-scale event, including the necessary considerations, task allocation among team members, and numerous other aspects. The key learning outcomes from this experience are detailed below.
LO1 – Identify our own strengths and area for growth
My experience allowed me to refine my event organization skills on a significant scale, given the participation of schools from all across India. It was crucial to ensure that they had access to essential facilities such as food, lodging, appropriate playing fields for different age groups, and other necessities for both players and coaches. I gained valuable insights into efficiently providing these facilities without encountering major issues. Additionally, I acquired problem-solving abilities, as we faced challenges like a shortage of playing fields relative to the number of participating categories. To address this, our organizing team reached out to nearby schools to secure additional football grounds. This experience also imparted various other skills vital for successful event coordination.
LO 2:- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
Participating in the ISSO event was instrumental in enhancing my communication skills, given the multitude of schools in attendance. Each school brought along at least 2-3 teams, along with their respective coaches. It was our responsibility to directly liaise with the coaches to convey important messages and announcements. On several occasions, I engaged in brief conversations with the players as well, contributing to the development of my social skills. On the second day of the event, heavy rainfall disrupted the proceedings, forcing us to delay the matches by nearly 5 hours. This unexpected turn of events led to venue and schedule changes, presenting a significant challenge for both our organizing team and sports staff, requiring comprehensive adjustments at every level.
LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in activities.
Upon our selection as volunteers, we wholeheartedly dedicated ourselves to the experience, showcasing unwavering perseverance throughout the entire planning and execution phases. Our determination revolved around making certain that the event achieved success, and we labored diligently for weeks, leaving no stone unturned to ensure that every aspect was meticulously arranged, and the event unfolded seamlessly. This steadfast commitment and perseverance exemplified our dedication to and resilience in our CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) experiences, as we ardently addressed and surmounted any challenges that came our way.
