I actively participated in a beach cleanup initiative to support the celebration of World Coastal Day at Dumas Beach in Surat, Gujarat. The primary goal was to raise awareness and eliminate long-standing debris on the beach, including items such as polythene bags, glass bottles, and fruit peels. My motivation stemmed from witnessing the significant amount of non-biodegradable waste along the coast the weekend prior to the event. Recognizing the severity of the issue, I eagerly seized the opportunity to contribute to the protection of our environment.
Engaging in the beach cleanup provided me with valuable insights into the environmental challenges we face, as part of my CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) experience. I learned that non-biodegradable waste poses a substantial threat to beach areas and their surrounding environments. It became evident that preserving our ecological balance requires continuous efforts such as raising awareness and actively participating in cleanup drives to ensure the cleanliness and sustainability of our beaches.
LO2 – [Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.]
Taking on the challenge of cleaning up the beach meant more than just picking up litter; it involved coordinating efforts with fellow volunteers, understanding the intricacies of waste disposal, and communicating effectively with the community. These challenges allowed me to develop organizational skills, teamwork, and a heightened sense of responsibility toward the environment.
LO5 – [ Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively ]
Working cooperatively and collaboratively had helped us to collect more trash and also motivated us all to collect more for better environmental sustainability.
LO6 – [Engagement with issues of global significance.]
The beach cleanup was more than a local initiative; it was a tangible response to a global issue – the environmental impact of plastic pollution and non-biodegradable waste. By actively participating in the cleanup, I engaged with an issue of global significance, contributing to the broader conversation surrounding environmental conservation and the need for sustainable practices.
