CAS Experience 7 – Aerospace Internship

Aerospace vehicle design virtual internship and training program

During my International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), I embarked on a remarkable journey of exploration and learning through a remote aerospace vehicle design internship. The internship, though conducted online, proved to be an immersive and transformative experience that challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and dive into the complexities of aerospace engineering.

My initial expectations for this internship were rooted in a desire to delve deeper into the realm of aerospace engineering and establish a strong foundation in the field. With a passion for aviation and a curiosity to understand the intricate details of aircraft design, I set out to explore this fascinating sector.

LO2 – Challenge & Skills :

One of the significant projects I was involved in focused on the construction of a gas turbine blade. This undertaking required collaboration with a team of experienced engineers, utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) software to meticulously craft detailed 3D models. As I worked on this project, I realized that my theoretical knowledge was just the tip of the iceberg. The challenge arose when I encountered the complexity of the CAD software. Learning to navigate and comprehend its functions and capabilities demanded a considerable investment of time and effort. Overcoming this obstacle, I not only customized the software to my advantage but also honed my problem-solving skills by tackling the challenges it presented.

Another major project involved modeling and simulating hypersonic flows using a missile as a reference. This endeavor introduced me to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, a tool that enabled me to analyze intricate aerodynamic behaviors. However, mastering this software proved to be another challenge, requiring dedicated hours of learning and experimentation. The experience pushed me to think critically, as I studied shockwaves, boundary layer interactions, and heat transfer effects. As I persevered, the intricacies of hypersonic flight design became clearer, opening my eyes to the multifaceted considerations required in aerospace engineering.

LO4 – Working Collaboratively with others :

Throughout the internship, collaboration played a pivotal role. Engaging in team meetings and contributing to discussions allowed me to share my findings, while also imbibing insights from seasoned professionals. This interaction fostered an environment of innovation and efficient problem-solving, reinforcing the idea that teamwork is integral in tackling complex challenges.

LO1 – Strength & Growth :

Looking back, this internship was more than just a set of projects; it was a journey that expanded my horizons. The experience deepened my understanding of aerospace engineering principles and honed my skills in CAD, structural analysis, and CFD. Beyond the technical skills, I developed a resilience to confront challenges head-on and a passion for continuous learning.

As I reflect on this experience, I can confidently say that it has contributed significantly to my personal growth and development. The lessons I learned in perseverance, collaboration, and adaptation are invaluable. This experience also shifted my perspective on the aerospace industry, showing me the intricacies behind the marvels of flight.

Looking ahead, I plan to apply the knowledge gained from this internship to my future studies and endeavors. Whether it’s in the pursuit of higher education or in contributing to real-world aerospace innovations, the skills and insights I’ve acquired will undoubtedly shape my journey.
